Day-by-Day Timeline

What to Expect During
Your Landscaping Project

From permits to final walkthrough — see exactly what happens each day of your patio, fire pit, or backyard installation. No surprises. No mystery. Just a clear, day-by-day breakdown of what we do, when we do it, and what you should expect.

The Full Timeline

Day by Day — From First Dig to Final Walkthrough

This is a typical timeline for a complete backyard transformation. Smaller projects (patio only) may take 5–7 days. Larger projects with kitchens and multiple features may extend to 2–3 weeks. Your written proposal includes your exact schedule.

Before Day 1

Permits, Materials & Pre-Build Prep

Before the crew arrives, we pull all required permits, confirm material deliveries, and stake out the project boundaries. You receive a confirmed start date, material samples for final approval, and a direct contact number for the owner.

Building permits obtained and posted
HOA approval documentation submitted (if required)
Material order confirmed with delivery schedule
Underground utilities marked (Miss Utility)
Project boundaries staked and layout confirmed with homeowner
Access path planned to protect existing landscaping
Dumpster or debris removal scheduled
Final material samples presented for approval
Day 1

Site Prep, Demolition & Grading

The crew arrives early, protects access paths with plywood, and begins demolition of existing surfaces. Heavy equipment excavates to proper depth, and grading establishes correct slope for drainage.

Protect driveways and lawn with plywood runs
Demolish existing patio, deck, or structures
Excavate to 6–10 inch depth (depending on project)
Grade the base with 1–2% slope for drainage away from house
Remove all debris — daily clean-up begins immediately
Soil compaction test on subgrade
Day 2–3

Base Installation & Compaction

The foundation is everything. We install crushed stone base in lifts, compacting each layer with a plate compactor to achieve 95%+ Proctor density. This prevents settling, shifting, and frost heave for decades.

Install 4–6 inches of crushed #57 stone base
Compact in 2-inch lifts with plate compactor
Install geotextile fabric for soil separation
Add and level 1-inch bedding sand layer
Verify slope and elevation with laser level
Edge restraint installed along perimeter
Day 4–6

Hardscape Installation — Pavers, Walls, Structure

The visible transformation begins. Pavers are laid in the chosen pattern, retaining walls are built course by course, and structures like pergolas or fire features take shape. This is where you see your design come to life.

Pavers laid in pattern (herringbone, basketweave, etc.)
Retaining walls built with drainage aggregate and filter fabric
Fire pit or fireplace structure assembled
Pergola posts set and leveled in concrete footings
Outdoor kitchen frame constructed
Daily progress photos sent to homeowner
Cuts made with wet saw for precision edge fitting
Day 7–8

Compaction, Joint Sand & Sealing

After pavers are laid, we compact the surface to settle everything into the bedding sand, then sweep polymeric sand into joints to lock pavers together. Optional sealant is applied for color enhancement and stain protection.

Vibratory plate compactor over finished paver surface
Polymeric sand swept into joints and activated with water
Edge restraints secured with spikes
Excess sand removed from paver faces
Optional sealer applied (if selected)
Drainage channels and outlets tested
Day 9–10

Utilities, Lighting & Features

Gas lines for fire features, electrical for lighting and kitchens, and irrigation connections are installed by licensed subcontractors. All work is inspected by the county before being covered or concealed.

Gas line run by licensed plumber for fire features
Low-voltage electrical installed for lighting
Outdoor kitchen gas and electrical connections
Irrigation tie-ins and valve installation
County inspections scheduled and passed
Smart controllers programmed for irrigation zones
Day 11–12

Softscaping, Mulch & Final Grading

Plants, sod, mulch, and decorative gravel are installed. Final grading ensures everything drains properly. The site is restored to look better than when we arrived — not like a construction zone.

Plant installation per design plan
Sod or seed applied to disturbed areas
Mulch and decorative gravel installed
Final grading and drainage verification
Construction debris fully removed
Plywood access paths removed, lawn repaired
Day 13

Final Walkthrough, Training & Handover

Victor or Grover walks the completed project with you, demonstrating every feature, explaining maintenance, and reviewing warranty coverage. You sign off on the final punch list and receive your warranty documentation.

Owner-led final walkthrough with homeowner
Demonstrate fire feature operation and safety
Explain irrigation controller programming
Review lighting zones and dimming controls
Provide maintenance schedule and care guide
Hand over 2-year warranty documentation
Final photos taken for portfolio and records
Leave review invitation and referral materials

Written Timeline — Every Contract

FAQs

Common Questions About the Build Process

How long does a typical patio installation take?
A standard paver patio (400–600 sq ft) takes 5–7 days from excavation to final walkthrough. Retaining walls add 2–3 days. Outdoor kitchens add 3–5 days. A complete backyard transformation with multiple features typically takes 10–14 days. Weather, permit inspections, and utility markings can extend timelines by a day or two — we build these contingencies into your written schedule.
Will my yard be destroyed during construction?
No — and we protect everything we can. Before excavation, we lay plywood runs across your lawn to prevent equipment damage. We install silt fencing to contain dust and debris. All disturbed areas are restored with sod, seed, or mulch before handover. Our goal is for your yard to look better after we leave than before we arrived.
Do I need to be home during construction?
You do not need to be home every day, but we recommend being available for the initial layout confirmation (Day 1 morning) and the final walkthrough (last day). We send daily progress photos so you can follow along even if you are at work. An owner is on site every day — you are welcome to visit anytime.
What happens if it rains?
Light rain does not stop work — we have tents and covers for sensitive phases. Heavy rain may pause excavation or base work for safety and quality reasons. If weather delays push us past your written completion date, the $250/day on-time guarantee still applies — weather is our contingency to manage, not yours.
Can we make changes once construction starts?
Minor changes (plant placement, lighting adjustments) can usually be accommodated on the spot at no cost. Structural changes (adding a fire pit mid-build, expanding the patio) require a formal change order with updated pricing. We document everything in writing before proceeding — no surprise charges.
How noisy is the construction?
Excavation and compaction are the loudest phases — typically the first 2–3 days. We start work at 7:30 AM and finish by 5:00 PM to respect neighbors. We notify adjacent properties before starting and are happy to adjust start times for special circumstances (sleeping babies, shift workers).
What if I am not satisfied with something?
Bring it up immediately — during construction or at the final walkthrough. We maintain a punch list throughout the project and correct any issue before final payment. Our 2-year workmanship warranty covers anything that surfaces after handover. We would rather fix something now than lose your referral later.
